Why I Wrote This Book
I wrote Where Profit Really Comes From because profit is often discussed as if it is simply the final result of sales minus costs.
But profit is shaped much earlier.
It is influenced by the price a business accepts, the discounts it gives, the costs it tolerates, the people it hires, the growth it pursues, and the decisions it delays.
Many businesses look at declining profit only after it appears in the numbers. By then, the underlying decisions may have been repeated for months or even years.
I wanted to explore what happens before the financial report.
This book is about looking beyond the final profit figure and understanding the everyday business choices that quietly strengthen or weaken it. The aim is not to provide accounting techniques or complex financial models, but to encourage a clearer understanding of how ordinary decisions create long term financial consequences.
Because where profit really comes from is not one major decision.
It comes from the decisions a business makes every day.
Inside the Book
Where Profit Really Comes From examines how everyday business decisions shape profit long before the final numbers appear in financial reports. The book follows the connection between ordinary choices, repeated patterns, and the financial character a business gradually develops.
Chapter 1: Profit Is a Result of Decisions
Understand why profit is shaped by everyday decisions, not effort alone, and how small choices gradually create patterns that strengthen or weaken financial results.
Chapter 2: Why Busy Businesses Often Earn Less
Explore why constant activity can create motion without progress and how busyness, urgency, and reactive decisions can quietly reduce clarity and profitability.
Chapter 3: Pricing Choices That Quietly Hurt Profit
Look at how pricing decisions made under pressure, hesitation around price increases, and weak confidence in value can slowly damage margins.
Chapter 4: Cost Growth That Goes Unnoticed
See how small and convenient expenses gradually become permanent, creating cost pressure that often remains invisible until profit begins to feel tight.
Chapter 5: Discounts, Deals, and the Profit Illusion
Understand why frequent discounting can create short term relief while weakening margins, changing customer behaviour, and making profitability harder to protect.
Chapter 6: Growth That Looks Good but Weakens Profit
Examine why higher sales and expansion do not automatically create stronger businesses and how growth can increase pressure when stability does not keep pace.
Chapter 7: Hiring and Expansion Before the Business Is Ready
Explore why hiring and expansion decisions made from exhaustion or urgency can increase complexity, fixed costs, and financial strain instead of creating relief.
Chapter 8: Time, Focus, and Profit Leakage
Understand how scattered attention, constant interruptions, and delayed important decisions create invisible costs and quietly weaken business performance.
Chapter 9: Decision Discipline and Profit Protection
Learn why consistency matters more than occasional smart decisions and how clear principles can protect margins, costs, and long term stability.
Chapter 10: Comfort Decisions That Slowly Weaken Profit
Recognise how decisions made to avoid difficult conversations, tension, or short term discomfort can gradually weaken the financial strength of a business.
Chapter 11: Simple Rules That Build Strong Profit
Discover how simple rules around recurring decisions can reduce emotional choices, remove unnecessary debate, and create greater consistency.
Chapter 12: Why Avoiding Discomfort Is More Expensive Than Risk
Explore why delaying uncomfortable action often creates greater long term costs than taking measured and deliberate decisions early.
Chapter 13: Decisions Made Too Late Cost More Than Decisions Made Wrong
Understand how excessive waiting creates drag, increases pressure, and makes problems more expensive, while timely decisions create movement and feedback.
Chapter 14: How Small Decisions Become the Financial Character of the Business
Bring the ideas together by examining how repeated decisions around pricing, spending, discounting, growth, and hesitation gradually shape whether a business becomes financially stable or fragile.
